- Fan Xian’s father sits and works while Fan Xian stands. Lady Liu gets updates from the servants on what’s happening in the library. She tells Si Zhe to go look at what they’re doing. He agrees but runs away last minute.
Fan Xian Meets His Father
- Hours pass until Fan Jian, Minister of Finance, looks up at Fan Xian. Fan Jian asks him what kind of person he wants to be. Fan Xian wants to be safe, rich, marry well, and be happy. His father asks how he plans to be rich. Fan Xian has different ideas: glass, soap, white sugar. They’ve all been invented by his mother already.
- Fan Jian tells Fan Xian about his mother’s successful business. After she died, it was taken over by the royal family, and named as “Nei Ku”, internal treasure. Fan Xian thinks it’s such a weird name because it’s the same as modern-day underwear.
- Nei Ku is in control by Princess Li Yun Rei. She’s like a sister to the Emperor. She has a daughter with Prime Minister Lin Ruo Fu, Lin Wan Er and is the girl who Fan Xian has to marry. Whoever marries Wan Er will have control of the nei ku. Fan Jian brought Fan Xian back to the capital to take back what belongs to him.
- Fan Jian gives Fan Xian the books on the business. He warns him to be careful as a lot of people want control of the nei ku for it’s large profitability.
The Royal Family
- Li Yun Rei meets with the Empress Dowager. She begs the Empress Dowager to stop Fan Xian from marrying Wan Er. The Empress Dowager gets Eunuch Hong to slap her and tells her only the Emperor has final say on marriages.
- Fan Jian tells Fan Xian there are two princes in contention for the throne, the Crown Prince and the Second Prince. Li Yun Rei has always supported the Crown Prince so the Emperor wants Fan Xian to take the control away. But, in doing so, this would anger the Crown Prince and makes it very likely that the attempted assassination in Dan Zhou was under the order of the Crown Prince.
One Happy Family
- The Fan family sit down together for dinner. Fan Jian tells Si Zhe to leave. He knows Butler Zhou was sent from Lady Liu. She had no idea Butler Zhou tried to kill Fan Xian. Fan Jian wonders if Lady Liu wanted to kill Fan Xian. She explains she never tried to kill Fan Xian. Ruo Ruo thinks it makes sense.
- Li Yun Rei’s loyal servant visits another servant and tells her to commit suicide.
- Li Yun Rei goes see the Emperor. She begs him to take back the marriage. He tells her she didn’t have to ruin Fan Xian’s name with the females but she denies knowing anything.
- Si Zhe comes back for dinner. Everyone’s in a great mood. Si Zhe is confused.
The Battle for Nei Ku
- Gong Dian comes back with news that servant Han organized the girls but she’s already dead. The Crown Prince arrives and he admits to planting the females. He lectures them on their tactics and how it’ll erase respect on the royal family.
- After dinner Fan Jian tells Fan Xian to be cautious in the capital. He knows Teng Zi Jing came back with Fan Xian. He gives him a record from the Crime and Legal Department. It’s an arrest on Teng Zi Jing. He also tells her his mother always did the unexpected. Someone harmed her and they don’t know if they’re still alive.
- Fan Xian doesn’t want to marry Lin Wan Er because he already likes someone (the girl with the chicken leg). He’s a person and not a chess piece. He doesn’t want to use his life to exchange a business. Fan Xian wants to live for himself.
- Li Yun Rei and the Crown Prince chat. The Emperor said their tactics was wrong but didn’t say they shouldn’t fight for nei ku. They decide to go after the Red Mansion story.
Teng Zi Jing Comes Back
- Fan Xian tells his servants to stop working. He tells them to leave and to give him quiet. Teng Zi Jing arrives with a knife and runs into Si Zhe. Teng Zi Jing pretends to be asleep. Si Zhe apologizes for trying to hit Fan Xian and invites him for lunch the next day.
- After, Si Zhe comes back and sees Teng Zi Jing. Fan Xian comes out and explains it’s his guard. Si Zhe prepares to teach Fan Xian a lesson the next day.
- Fan Xian shows Teng Zi Jing the arrest papers on his crime of killing an official. He finds it weird the Overwatch Council took him in in spite of this.
